Punakha Dzong: A Symbol of Bhutanese Grandeur

Punakha Dzong, also known as Pungthang Dewa chhenbi Phodrang (meaning “the palace of great happiness or bliss”), is a majestic structure located in the heart of the Punakha–Wangdue valley in Bhutan. Constructed by Ngawang Namgyal, the 1st Zhabdrung Rinpoche in the 17th century, it is the second oldest and second largest dzong in Bhutan. The Dzong served as the administrative centre of Punakha District and was the winter capital of Bhutan.

A Glimpse into the History

The Dzong houses sacred relics of the southern Drukpa Lineage of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, including the Rangjung Kasarpani and the sacred remains of Ngawang Namgyal and the tertön Pema Lingpa.

The Architectural Marvel

Situated at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (father) and Mo Chhu (mother) rivers, Punakha Dzong is a stunning example of Bhutanese architecture. The Dzong is surrounded by lush jacaranda trees that bloom beautifully in the spring. The Punakha Suspension Bridge, a short distance from the Dzong, offers a breathtaking view of the Dzong and the surrounding landscapes.
